God’s sovereign activity, illustrated in the determination of events (3:1–15) and the determination of the lot of humanity (3:16–22). Qohelet begins with a thesis statement that encompasses “everything” (lakkōl) and “every matter” (lĕkol-ḥēpeṣ). From the start one gets a hint that the issue is not the human decision to choose the opportune moment to act. The noun zĕmān “season” is ordinarily used of predetermined or appointed time.
